When you're not living to your fullest potential. When you're holding back. When you're settling. You know.
The universe has perfected the art of bringing it to your attention with Vegas-like signage.
But we've perfected an art of our own — becoming masters at averting our eyes from the signals and red flags. Even training to ignore our instincts. Most don't think much of it. After all, it's easier to drown out our internal GPS and let fear and uncertainty navigate our lives.
After all, comfort zones are ribbed for your pleasure.
Here's the thing. Failing to be true to yourself transcends the surface-level woes of working a shitty job or failing to tell someone they deeply hurt you. Unmet core needs, suppressed emotions and unresolved issues don't just shrivel up and wither away.
(Heh) If only it went down that way.
I have a theory about the impact emotional self-neglect and aversion has on our lives. My feet have pidder-paddered down this path a time or two.
The facts I cite are true. The way they're threaded is my own (although I've read similar approaches to the topic). I'm just now starting to channel my inner Bill Nye so I'll be first to admit — it's elementary — but I think you'll find some valuable takeaways.
THE ENERGY OF THOUGHTS
You invest energy into creating thoughts. Literally.
Energy fuels all the moving parts of your brain necessary to produce thoughts. I like the way John Kehoe explains energy behind thoughts:
"All physical reality is made up of vibrations of energy; even your thoughts are vibrations of energy. While it sounds like a concept or theory, this is a new reality that quantum physics has revealed to us."
Energy is funny. Because The First Law of Thermodynamics...
We can’t create it or destroy it. Energy can only be transformed.
So you see, “stashing away” that energy — knowing you’re not living to your fullest potential, ignoring that vegas-like signage, continuing to neglect your dreams, or even repressing unresolved issues — doesn’t destroy it. It’s just shacked up somewhere else within the fragile confines of your body. Hoping to be harnessed and put to intended use.
And it pulls out all sorts of tricks to get your attention.
Lissa Rankin, M.D., drives the point home in The Healing Power of Telling Your Story:
"So many of us leave our stories untold, our songs unsung—and when this happens, we wind up feeling lonely, listless, out of touch with our life’s purpose, plagued with a chronic sense that something is out of alignment. We may even wind up feeling unworthy, unloved, or sick."
Moral of the story boys and girls: Just because it hurts less doesn’t mean it disappeared —
It’s manifesting as something else.
How’s it showing up in your life?
You might flirt with the notion of yielding to the universe and it's attempts to guide you. Maybe bat your lashes at what life could be like if you followed through. But then you take a step back — building resentment — knowing you should've just went for it.
Stop playing 'just the tip' and start taking action steps toward unpacking your story, your potential, your gifts.
Make energy your bitch. Take your life back. And never let it go again ♥
